Snowshoe Training for 10K in April

Ok, so going snowshoeing up a big mountain doesn’t really prepare me for a barefoot 10K running race, but it’s the most exercise I’ve done in the last two weeks, so I’m counting it as training :) The picture is at the (almost) sumit of Mt. Pinos in the Angeles National Forest. The snowshoes on our feet were really nice to keep us from sinking into the powder that had fallen the night before. Look at that blue sky. Beautiful! There’s a rental place called Mt. Pinos Wintersports Rentals in Frazier Park, CA that I would recommend to anyone in the area. It was $21 for both of us all day for parking at the mountain and renting snowshoes, galoshes, and poles. They don’t have a website but there’s more info here. Beats downhill skiing rates anyday, and this gives a lot more exercise!
In any case, the real point of this post is that I recently registered for the Camarillo Kiwanis Club 10K run on April 9 and am really looking forward to it. Camarillo is my hometown, and this 10K race course was the second official race I ever did back in 2008. My time then was 1:03, and is my official time to beat for this year. I ran 6 miles in 58 minutes back in October 2010, but that was right after my half marathon and I was in better shape than I am now. Still, I’m going to try. Life has been quite busy for me recently and I’ve not kept up regular running, but as I learned with the superbowl run in February, nothing motivates me to get out and do some training more than registering for a race. There’s something about paying money to wear a number bib and run with a group of people that is much more exciting than not paying money and just running with a group of people. I fall for it every time!
What’s also exciting is that the April 9 10K will be my tenth official race! 10K to celebrate 10 races. I like it! I’m making a promise to myself that there will be no more excuses for not getting out and running (like: It’s too cold, too rainy, I’m too tired, I have too much to cook, too many papers to grade…). I’m going tomorrow after school gets out! Pinky promise.
