Allison's Big Toe

I call it “Life Conscious”

Hey! Someone else has the same philosophy as I do! And he’s actually making a living at it. Well, I still like teaching high school English.

Mark Sisson’s philosophy:

“Really, my health philosophy is surprisingly simple. I follow a diet based on an understanding of evolutionary science. I think it’s more important to eat, move, and live according to how humans are designed and not according to society’s artificial developments of the last 100 years. Fortunately, this regimen is not only incredibly healthy, it’s quite simple.

In a nutshell:
- fresh, organic, unprocessed food – no junk!
- daily activity – whether it’s the gym or a walk along the beach, it all counts
- plenty of quality sleep
- plenty of water, no soda or sweetened drinks
- antioxidants galore – the key to limiting stress
- a good fish-oil supplement
- lots of essential fats, reckless amounts of vegetables, and clean protein
- time for fun – don’t take anything too seriously – ethical behavior – because what goes around comes around
- taking responsibility for yourself and your life – openness to new things and ideas”

Well said!

Gnu Foods Bars-Yum!

I want to share one of my favorite food items—Gnu Foods Bars. Thanks to my good cook husband, I don’t eat much packaged food, but I am a teacher and at times I need an easy snack. I usually snack in the morning around 10:00 after the fullness from the big bowl of cereal, fruit, protein powder, and soymilk that I eat at about 6 am wears off.

So, I looked around EVERYWHERE to try to find a good cereal bar that didn’t have too much sugar.  Lara bars, Cliff bars, Power bars, Think Thin—all of these and more had something that just wasn’t healthy: either actual cane sugar instead of just fruit juice for sweetening, or artificial flavorings and ingredients.

Then I found Gnu Foods bars at Lassen’s Natural Foods & Vitamins (a local chain in Ventura County) and was excited because they seemed to be perfect.  I bought a few and was surprised and happy that they taste really good for a health-food bar, they’re all natural, fruit juice-sweetened, and filling. I’ve eaten one a day at school as my snack for the past few months.  Really beats the frozen food that they sell in the cafeteria.

With the Joy of Fiber Club that Gnu Foods offers on their website, I can buy a minimum of 30 bars for a discounted price (less than I could by the same amount of bars at Lassen’s) and get free shipping to my house.  The shipments recur each month unless I change my settings, but they’re easy to manage and I can cancel any time. I’m so happy I found them!
